Men United (in song)
One man’s story of cancer, camaraderie and choirs!
Geoff Spooner is an ordinary bloke - a retired builder with a wit as warm as his Swindon accent. He’s happily married to Jo, with grown-up kids and a large, loving extended family close by.
He is also living with prostate cancer, something which snuck up on him a year or so ago and which was treated with a radical prostatectomy at the beginning of this year.
This is a more common story than most men imagine. But in other ways, Geoff is not so ordinary.
He’s a singer.
More specifically he is a singer with The Magnificent AK47 – the singing blokes of Ashton Keynes. With 40 other blokes (including his nephew Big Phil) he gets to meet up in the White Hart and sing, drink and perform songs about Sheds, Tools and yes, male health (an ode to the tragedy of Man Flu).
But they’re more than just singers, they’re mates and when they found out about Geoff’s diagnosis they decided to do something about it.
So they’ve organised a whole day of men’s singing in Bristol’s magnificent St George’s Hall. A workshop in the afternoon is open to ALL singers of ALL type, men and women, boys and girls – regardless of whether you sing every week or keep it to the shower – The Massive Magnificent Man Sing will be followed by a concert featuring some of Bristol’s best men’s singing groups: Kettle of Fish , Bristol Man Chorus , The Raff Pack and The Gasmen Collective. All for Geoff, and to raise money for Prostate Cancer UK and to raise awareness among all the other blokes attending to look out for themselves a little bit better.
It all happens on 6th October and details can be found at St Georges Bristol
